Propecia has a long history of fortunate discoveries. It remains to be a well-tolerated, safe and an effective medical option for the treatment of male pattern baldness. Though invented to treat enlarged prostate glands, it was discovered that patients taking the drug were miraculously growing hair at a fast rate, even the ones suffering from male pattern baldness. A reputed drug company soon discovered that they could sell Propecia as an aid in growing hair if the dosage is taken up to 1 milligram. With a lot of marketing and research, Propecia entered the market with flying colors and became one of the most successful drugs ever sold by the pharmaceutical giant due to the high density of balding men in the USA. Though initial studies had shown side-effects associated with the reproductive organs, not a lot of emphasis was laid on them by the company in an attempt to window dress the miracle drug. In June 2011, the FDA issued a warning to all medical practitioners proclaiming that Propecia though was effective in treating hair loss, caused an alarming number of side-effects related to sexual disorders and so it should be prescribed cautiously.
Does the Propecia drug cause sexual problems in men?
It has been seen, of late, that the patients being treated with Propecia started exhibiting symptoms such as ejaculation disorders, erectile dysfunctions and decreased levels of libido. These were the most adverse reactions to Propecia which were being found in the majority of the patients being treated with this medication. The reason behind it creating adverse effects on the sexual life of a person revolves around the mechanism on which the Propecia drug pivots. Propecia has secured a place with a class of drugs called 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, which are used to treat conditions invigorated by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a powerful hormone the body makes from testosterone. Propecia has an active ingredient called finasteride which suppresses the DHT levels in the body, i.e. it hampers the androgen hormone which is instrumental in determining sexuality and sexual development. The symptoms existed for a prolonged period extending up to even three years.
Are the sexual disorders caused by Propecia hair loss treatment permanent?
There is no answer to this burning question, presently. The interrelation between the intake of Propecia and various sexual disorders though seen and affirmed has not been scientifically established. There is no documented literature or scientific explanation at this moment to ascertain the reason why Propecia acts in this manner against the sexual hormones and cause the said disorder. Certain studies conducted portray the side effect to diminish from the day the patient withdraws from the treatment. However, certain cases have come forth where the effects are permanent. A study suggests that using 5mg Propecia has led to severe depression in male patients between the ages of 18 to 50. This has led to a new research in the field which though has not provided conclusive results; it certainly suggests that the issue is more complicated than previously thought out to be by the company.
